Marc Perrin gives his first impressions on the 2012 vintage in Southern Rhone. Famille Perrin has just finished harvesting and kept some beautiful images of this 2012 harvest in this film ” 2012 Harvest at Famille Perrin” . Let’s come back to this particular year…

Marc Perrin: “The first month of the year was extremely mild with temperatures reaching 18°C in the afternoons, so much so that the almond trees even started to flower. In contrast, February was extremely cold with record temperatures of -12°C. This lasted 10 days and was accompanied by strong Mistral winds of 120 km/h, which accentuated the effect of the cold temperatures. The Spring was cool and wet with strong Mistral (172km/h on April 16th). Budburst took place at the beginning of April and was heterogeneous throughout the different varieties. Flowering was globally a little later than usual due to the cooler spring. The summer was also contrasted with a month of July that was not too hot but dry and windy whereas August saw very hot temperatures reaching 41.9°C on 21 August causing hydric deficit.

Marc Perrin : “We started harvesting on August 27th with a few white varieties and began the red varietals with Syrah on the 7th September. Harvest conditions were good (no rain till September 23rd) and temperatures were average. The crop was very healthy due to the climatic conditions and the phenolic maturity was very good so the alcohol content is not too high in 2012. We ended harvest with Mourvèdre on October 12 with another indian summer in september and october.

Marc Perrin : “This year we acquired a new de-stemming machine and did a double-sorting; before de-stemming we sorted the bunches and after de-stemming we sorted the grapes. Yields in 2012 are slightly lower than average, around 24hl/h. The fermentations were quite slow in 2012 due to thicker skins and therefore needed a longer maceration period. The first tastings of the 2012 vintage show wines with a fantastic balance, homogenous, voluptuous fruit, colour and tannins. The mourvèdre and counoise are particularly exceptional. “
