Rhône’s Château de Beaucastel is Top Value Brand of 2014

Recently named “Wine Personality of the Year 2014″ by Decanter magazine, Famille Perrin is again the hot topic of conversation in the world of brands. Liv Ex has just announced that Chateau de Beaucastel was Top Value Brand of 2014. Rhone has particularly well performed in this palmares as four (Beaucastel, Pegau, Chapoutier, Clos des Papes) out of the Top 10 Value Brands of 2014 come from this region.

In November Liv-ex released the 2014 Power 100 – the annual list of the most powerful brands in the fine wine market. And for the second year in a row, Pavie was top of the table (read our post). But what about Top Value brands? Liv-Ex decided to reconstruct the Power 100 to see which wines offer value for money. In order to identify lower-priced buying opportunities, they removed all of the brands that have a market price of more than an average of £2,000 per case (based on vintages traded Sep 2013 – Aug 2014). Liv-Ex ranked the brands according to their average price (the lower the price, the better the ranking), average score, one-year performance and the number of vintages traded.

Why Rhone did perform so well in this palmares? Because, from the North to the South, some leading wine estates have decided historically to offer a large range of wines at different price levels and with a strong focus on quality. As Michel Chapoutier said last year to the Wine Spectator magazine: “lt’s easy to prove you can make a great bottle of wine for $150 from Hermitage. But to make a great bottle of wine for $20 from someplace else? That’s entirely different. When you have an entirely different margin for cost and price yet you still put that same effort in to make something great! That’s special, and not everyone is willing to do that.”

And it is no coincidence Famille Perrin tops this palmares: They are the leading organic wine grower of the Southern Rhône Valley where they occupy the regions best terroirs. Their values have given them a worldwide reputation for excellence: absolute respect for the soil, a commitment to manual methods and a deep belief that organic viticulture is the only way to express the true essence of the terroir. Moreover the combination of talents within the family ensures the continuation of their unique expertise. Just have a look to Famille Perrin’s website to understand their philosophy.
