“Very long” and “Very exciting”, the New Riesling by Michel Chapoutier

Schieferkopf (1)

“Very exciting” is a good definition of Riesling and also of the new Lieu-Dit Berg of Schieferkopf wine estate. This is the opinion of the English critic Jancis Robinson who described this 2012 Alsace as “Very long” and “Very exciting”. This new Lieu-Dit from Schieferkopf is now available in UK and USA, alongside the two other Lieux-Dits Fels and Buehl.

Passionate by soils and terroirs, Michel Chapoutier has always worked on the singular and unique expression of each plot with the Sélections Parcellaires (Single Vineyard Selections) that have made his reputation in the Rhône Valley. So he naturally got interested in Alsace terroirs and in 2009 he acquired, with some friends, the Schieferkopf wine estate, an exceptional vineyard planted on the only vein of blue schist in the Alsace region. A unique terroir in this area, particularly good for Riesling grapes with a soil full of quartz inclusion and blue schist. Here, the work on the soils is really meaningful and everything is done to convert the wine estate to organic farming.

The Lieu-Dit Berg joins today the two other Lieux-Dits that are already produced. Located on the same side as Fels and Buelh, the Lieu-Dit Berg has deeper soils. The plot is south facing, at an altitude of 380 m , which gives a delicate fruit to this vibrant wine. On the 2012 vintage, Schieferkopf Lieu-Dit -Berg reveals a golden color with green glints and notes of plum on the nose with fresh citrus tangerine, grapefruit and a hint of menthol and celery aromas. This wine is elegant and lively on the palate with a bitter salinity, highlighted by a hint of minerality.
